Children with ADD will only pay attention when they are doing something that they enjoy to do. If a task is repetitive or boring forget about it. A child with ADD will literally just tune out of something boring like switching the channel on your television.

Another common sign of a child with ADD is that they do not pay “close attention” to things that are being talked about. Kids with ADD will listen until they get bored and then just tune out like they were not even listening at all. This can really be a problem in the class room because many times children with ADD will tune out their teachers.

Children with ADD will frequently switch from one task to another without finishing anything. Keeping their school work all organized and planned out is harder then it is for most children. This could be a big issue in the classroom because most teachers do not put up with late homework.

When a child with ADD studies or does work it is best to keep them in a quiet and calm environment. This way they can keep all their attention on their work and not get distracted.

If you are a parent of a child with ADD it is important to be extra helpful with their school work. Since school work for most children is boring, it will definitely not keep the attention of a child with ADD. It is also a good idea to keep in contact with their teachers to see how they are behaving, and doing in the class.

Just because a child had ADD does not mean they are not as smart as the other children without it. They simply just have issues paying attention. This has nothing to do with how smart a child is. All a child with ADD needs is to be pointed in the right direction.
